North Star Institute

Founded in 1847 by Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist North Star newspaper was published to  give voice to the oppressed, and in its first issued proclaimed, “the man who has suffered the wrong is the man to demand redress,—that the man STRUCK is the man to CRY OUT—and that he who has endured the cruel pangs of Slavery is the man to advocate Liberty.” The North Star Institute has been created with a similar focus to that of Douglass, utilizing research, dialogue and data to drive a national conversation focused on democratizing CS. Activities within this initiative include:

  • Dissemination of findings about our programs
  • Funded data projects
  • Speaker and author series
  • Funded research projects
  • Consortium of CS equity centers
